When responding to open-ended questions about a text, it’s very important to cite textual evidence. In order to do this, we use the R-S-S-E format. Here’s what it stands for:
- R – Restate the question.
- S – Support your answer in your own words.
- S – Support your answer with evidence from the text.
- E – Extend your answer by making a connection to your life, another text, or the world.
If you use this format each time you respond to an open-ended question about a text, you’re guaranteed to include text evidence in your response!
